TRAINING

The training was developed to address the research-based rationale for collecting SOGI information in the course of a death investigation, designed to interest Medical Examiners and other administrative personnel in our SOGI training program.

Designed for Death Investigators, Coroners and Medical Examiners, and other administrative personnel, the Training Program provides a research-based rationale for collecting SOGI information in the course of a death investigation.

The purpose of the Training is to provide participants with an understanding of:

  • Why it is important to collect information on decedents' sexual orientation and gender identity;

  • What we mean by gender identity and sexual orientation, especially in the context of a death investigation;

  • How gender identity and sexual orientation information can be collected in a death investigation, and;

  • How this information is reported and used.

The training includes a PowerPoint presentation to be used in the didactic portion of the training session, as well as role play exercises that simulate conversations with informants about the decedent’s sexual orientation and gender identity. The flexible format of the training is designed to allow it to be implemented in sessions ranging from 90 minutes to three hours.

The training has been certified by the American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators (ABMDI), which allows participants to receive Continuing Education Credits on completion.
